5 Ways To Prep For NaNoWriMo
Every year on November 1st, writers around the world huddle into their desk chairs with a comfy blanket, a cup of coffee/tea/wine/whiskey and commit to writing 50,000 words in one month. NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Moth) is a big goal that asks a lot of a writer’s creative energy and patience, but there are some things you can do this month to help make your November challenge a little bit easier.
Participate in NaNoWriMo’s Prep Series
For the first time, the NaNo organization is sponsoring a prep series through their brand new website. There is a master guide to help you find an idea for your book, develop characters, setting and an outline. There are also online write-ins and a whole community of our writers getting excited that you can join.
Settle Into a New Schedule
Before November sneaks up on you, go ahead and establish a new schedule. If you’re a morning person, get in the habit of waking up an hour early. Or if you’re a night owl, set a time to turn off your television and start writing an hour before bed. Getting used to these schedules now will insure you’re more likely to keep up with it come November. For a fun experiment, check to see which of these famous author’s schedules you’d most like to emulate.
Find Your Perfect New Playlist
Instead of wasting time on November 1st setting up the best list of songs to get you in the writing mood, research your most motivational music now so you’ll be ready to press play on day 1. If you don’t know what you’re writing yet, just find songs that get your creative juices flowing. If you have an idea for your story, find songs that best fit the mood and tone of your book.
Check Out Reedsy
If you’re stuck trying to think of a title, pen name, location, twist, main character name or any other random generator, Reedsy probably has it. While the website is set up to connect authors to editors, cover designers and other resources, their writing tools a big help in generating new ideas. Plus their weekly writing prompts may help you get new words flowing each week.
Announce Your New Project
Finally, don’t forget to announce to your friends and family that you’re participating in NaNoWriMo this year. Get them excited for your new goal and gently remind them that you’re going to be a crazy person for the next few weeks. Plus there’s something about posting your book cover on social media that is oddly satisfying.
